Geocache Description:

Santa Monica Airport began as a dirt strip in a barley field in 1919. It was known as Clover Field then (named for World War I pilot Lt. Greayer 'Grubby' Clover). Howard Hughes and film director Hal Roach used to tie down there. Aviation pioneer Donald Wills Douglas' dreams took flight there when it became the home of his aircraft plant.

DC model planes, military and civilian (up to and including the DC-10) were built there. The first around-the-world flight, which was orchestrated by Douglas, took off and landed there.

On March 17, 1924, he made history when eight Army airmen took off from Clover Field in four single-engine, open-cockpit Douglas World Cruisers. They intended to circle the globe, but stopped by Seattle so they could designate it as their takeoff point. That would trim time off their journey - two weeks, as it turned out. The aviators flew into sandstorms, driving rain, Arctic winds and, once, a mountain. Two planes crashed, but no one died. The two remaining aircraft returned to Clover Field 28,945 miles and 175 days later, having gone around the world and sealed Douglas Aircraft's reputation.

The first flight of a DC-3, one of the most significant airplanes in aviation history, originated from Clover Field on December 17, 1935.

NOW TO THE CACHE: The above coordinates will lead you to a plaque commemorating Clover Field/Santa Monica Airport, the oldest airport now operating in LA County.

Find the Parlor number on the plaque.
To get to the final cache, go from here:
North 0.(Parlor # - 156) minutes (true)
West 0.(Parlor # - 233) minutes (true)

From the plaque you can drive close to the final location which has free parking. The area is always open during daylight hours, and on a clear day you can see the mountains and even the ocean. Hope you enjoy it. There's even a nice restaurant (Typhoon) and if you like Sushi, try 'The Hump'.

We got the small cache container from Team Dakiba's 'Cache N'Babies' (GCFA8F). Please bring only small items to trade.
