Geocache Description:

Come and celebrate Dönerstag between 18:00 and 19:00.

Dönerstag began in Germany in 2007 when cachers met at kebab shops all over the country on a Thursday i.e. Donnerstag in German.  It has continued since and spread to other countries so Groundspeak have decided to produce a souvenir to celebrate this tradition in 2017.  This souvenir will be available to anyone logging an event (other than a CITO event) on Thursday 13 April.

It’s safe to say that the centre of Cleator Moor has seen better days e.g. the greengrocer and wet fish shop closed some time ago, the Post Office and the Co-op have relocated down the road and the pharmacy is now in the new Health Centre.  There is however one type of business which seems to be thriving, in fact the town has sometimes been described as the takeaway capital of Cumbria. At the last count there were six kebab shops so what better place to celebrate Dönerstag?

The coordinates are for a group of picnic tables beside the Whitehaven to Ennerdale/C2C cycle path and adjacent to a free car park.  Update 15 March: NB this car park has a height barrier however there is street parking in the vicinity. Given that rain is not unknown in Cumbria, shelter is available under the nearby Phoenix Bridge (or bring a brolly).  This will be an informal event for meeting other cachers, swapping tales and trackables etc.  however it would be great if people could arrive with a kebab in keeping with the theme. At least one kebab shop has a vegetarian option. Pizza, fish and chips, Chinese and Indian are also available although eating is of course optional. The various takeaways are to be found within a quarter of a mile up the hill from the car park entrance.

Given that it’s the beginning of the Easter weekend many people will no doubt be heading away but if you’re staying at home please come and join us.
