Geocache Description:

The John and Olive Diefenbaker Museum is located in a house which was built in 1912 for the Jaffray family.  Mr. Jaffray was the manager of the Imperial Bank of Canada.

From 1947 to 1951, John Diefenbaker lived in the house with his first wife Edna.  She described the house as her "dream home".  Edna died in 1951, and in 1953, Diefenbaker married the former Olive Freeman.  John and Olive lived in the house from the date of their marriage until Diefenbaker was elected as Canada's thirteenth Prime Minister in 1957.  As Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Diefenbaker lived in the official residence in Ottawa, and the Diefenbakers rented their Prince Albert home, most often to the successive publishers of the Prince Albert Daily Herald.  After his defeat in the 1963 election, the Diefenbakers lived in the official residence of the leader of Her Majesty's Official Opposition.  When he was no longer the leader of the Progressive Conservative party, the Diefenbakers bought a private residence in Rickcliffe, a suburb of Ottawa.  Mr. Diefenbaker lived in that house even after the death of Mrs. Diefenbaker, until his death on August 16, 1978.

Prior to the death of Olive Diefenbaker, the couple gave the house to the City of Prince Albert to be utilized as a museum.  The museum, which is managed by the Prince Albert Historical Society, is furnished with artefacts from the Diefenbaker's homes in Prince Albert and Ottawa.  On August 16, 2018, the house was designated as a National Historic site.

From the day after the Victoria Day weekend until the Labour Day weekend in September, the museum is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  From September to the Victoria Day weekend, arrangements to tour the house can be made by arrangement.  The Historical Society can be contacted by telephone at 306-764-2992, or by email at curator@historypa.com
