Geocache Description:

Find this and you will see a monument and exhibit which memorializes the determination and vision of those who forged the 1st automobile highway across the Sand Hills. Drive the road past the Buttercup Ranger Station close to the coordinates then walk or hop on your quad or motorcycle a very short distance to find the nano cache. Bring a writing stick. Update: Congrats to Bronco Busters for FTF within minutes of this posting!

This is the 2nd of an ambitious series of caches to be hidden along CA's Historic Highway 80 from San Diego to the AZ border.
Imagine travelling 7 treacherous miles through the Imperial Sand Dunes on narrow, bumpy wooden planks in the sweltering heat, no air conditioning, while trying not be swept off by strong dry winds. Still, this was a marvel of modern engineering for its time and the only way to drive across the dunes from Arizona into Imperial Valley and on into San Diego from 1916 – 1926.
Remnants of the Plank Road may be seen at the west end of Grays Well Road, the frontage road south of Interstate 8. The Plank Road monument and interpretive display lie approximately three miles west of the Sand Hills interchange. This portion was preserved as a result of efforts by the Bureau of Land Management, the Imperial Valley Pioneer Historical Society, the California Off-Road Vehicle Association and Air Force personnel. These groups worked together in the early 1970s to assemble a 1500 ft section from various locations in the dunes. In recognition of the Plank Road's stature as an important historic example of transportation technology, the State of California designated its ruins as a California Historical Landmark.
