Geocache Description:

The Battle of Cropredy Bridge was fought during the Civil War in June 1644. But Sir William Waller's attack on King Charles' army failed - he lost his entire battery of 11 guns and his chief gunner, Col James Wemyss, into the bargain. When Wemyss was later brought before the King he grovelled "Gud feith, my heart was alwayes with His Majestie".

Parking is available by the Sports Ground at: N52° 06.845 W001° 18.830. From here it is a short walk to the Bridge which is at the coordinates at the top of this page. If you have young children beware of the nearby water.

The bridge was built by the Bishop of Lincoln in 1ABC, and after several alterations, was re-built in 1DEF. These simple clues gives you the coordinates of the cache, which is at:

N52° 06.D(A-E)B
W001° 18.(C+C+B)(F-B)E

Stay awhile to explore this pretty little village. The canal-side is particularly beautiful, but see if you can find the locations of our other photos below (click for a closer look). There are some interesting little shops in the village, and some rather unusual street names! (the village green is apparently shaped like a cup and saucer). The Red Lion is a 15th century thatched village tavern, tucked away down a very narrow lane (appropriately called "Red Lion Street") opposite the churchyard, and is well worth a visit for good food and ale.

Cropredy is also the site of the Fairport's Cropredy Convention - the annual three-day festival of "music and good cheer" - held on the second weekend in August.
