Geocache Description:

The Cache:

You must be an advanced, certified Scuba Diver to find this cache. You will most likely need to book a dive charter with one of the NC dive operators out of Morehead City, Atlantic Beach, or Beaufort, NC. The coordinates will get you to the wreck site of the Aeolus.

The cache is hidden on the stern of the wreck. If you drop down to 82 feet on the port side of the stern, you should see the cache container. This should be easy to spot.  The container is a plastic ammo box with an underwater slate for the log. Please do NOT try to remove the cache as it is locked to the wreck. PLEASE DO NOT BRING THE CONTAINER TOPSIDE. You can sign the log while you are underwater.

The Wreck:

The shipwreck Aeolus was sunk in August 1988 as part of North Carolina's artificial reef program. It is a 409-foot tanker that lies at a depth of 120 feet. As a result of hurricanes in 1996, this ship has been split into three portions, and has also partially been turned to an upright position--making it an excellent multi-level dive.

This is a prime site to dive with and photograph sand tiger sharks.  In recent years, the sharks have taken up residence and cruise around in the open cabin area on the stern of the wreck.  This has become known as "Club Aeolus" for the sharks...it is their club. This site is my favorite site to go to for photographing sharks as well as hanging out with them in da' club. :) Here are a just a couple of my many shark pictures taken on the wreck:
