Geocache Description:

Walk or x-country ski into Butternut Pond on old abandoned town highways without much elevation gain. Look out for moose.

This is a wonderful 2 ½ hour round trip walk on an old dirt road through the woods to a very remote pond. Starting at Old Route 10 the cache is 1 ½ miles away. However, its starting point is just off Route 89. This walk can be done by nearly everyone and we have placed the cache so that you can do it on x-country skis or snowshoes during the winter. All of the streams have bridges or stepping-stones. All of the puddles in the old road have either high shoulders or side paths. Look for them. You could also do this on a snowmobile as some of the road is on the NH Snowmobile Trail. While placing this cache we came across moose, deer and raccoon tracks. Moose have been seen in the pond.

From the North: take exit 14 on Rt. 89 then take Old Route 10 South. From the South: take exit 13 on Rt. 89 then take Old Route 10 North. At coordinates 43° 33.390N and 072° 08.574W turn off Old Route 10 onto a NH Class 6 Highway (this is the designation for an unmaintained road subject to gates and bars, a public right of way, and most generally they are in the woods) that has an opened metal cattle gate. Please note that the 'no trespassing' sign at the edge of the filed near the gate is for the field. Do not go into the field but stay on the dirt road. You can park along the side Old Route 10 and walk in or take the Class 6 Highway for a short while. We did it in a Subaru and we made it though the puddles in the road. Go through the Route 89 underpasses and bear right paralleling Route 89 south. Again park here or continue on until the road takes a left at 43° 33.272N 072° 08.432W. Do not travel any further in your auto unless it is high clearance and you are up for an adventure. Enjoy.

This cache is an ammo box and contains:
Lanyard, hot hands, spool of Velcro, 3 fishing lures, krazy glue, alien figure, pocket flashlight and a Geocache zipper compass. Also Show Me Your (ahem) Bug might be in for a long cold Winter if someone doesn't get him out of here.
