Il Bastione Sangallo, detto anche Baluardo del Sangallo o Polveriera, si trova all'estremo angolo orientale della città. Chiudeva le antiche Mura Malatestiane parallele al mare all'angolo orientale.
Il Bastione è stato progettato da Antonio da Sangallo il giovane nel 1532, quando il Papa Clemente VII volle una completa revisione delle strutture difensive nella Marca anconetana.
L'opera fu portata a termine nel 1552 da Luca da Sangallo, nel periodo del pontificato di Giulio III, il cui simbolo campeggia nello sperone antistante la stazione ferroviaria, ivi sistemato in occasione dell'anno santo 1550.
Internamente si divide in due livelli, uno più alto (piazza alta) da dove le artiglierie avevano modo di controllare mare e spiaggia, e uno più basso, distinto in una piazza a mare ed in una piazza a monte, dotate di porticati. La santabarbara (da cui il nome Polveriera) era sistemata nel punto più difeso e inaccessibile del Bastione. Col passare del tempo si finì per usare a scopo difensivo soltanto la piazza alta.
Il Bastione, recentemente restaurato, è aperto al pubblico per la visita e vi si svolgono eventi culturali.
È presente anche un piccolo bar per fare un aperitivo all'aperto in una location suggestiva.

The Bastione Sangallo, also called Baluardo del Sangallo or Polveriera, is located in the far eastern corner of the city. It closed the ancient Malatestian Walls parallel to the sea at the eastern corner.
The Bastion was designed by Antonio da Sangallo the young in 1532, when Pope Clement VII wanted a complete overhaul of the defensive structures in the Ancona province.
The work was completed in 1552 by Luca da Sangallo, in the period of the pontificate of Julius III, whose symbol stands out in the spur in front of the railway station, set there for the Holy Year 1550.
Internally it is divided into two levels, a higher one (piazza alta) from where the artilleries were able to control the sea and the beach, and a lower one, distinguished in a square by the sea and in a square upstream, equipped with arcades. The Santabarbara (hence the name Polveriera) was located at the most defended and inaccessible point of the Bastion. Over time, only the high square was used for defensive purposes.
The Bastione, recently restored, is open to the public for visits and cultural events are held there.
There is also a small bar for an aperitif outdoors in a suggestive location.
