Ynysybwl grew out of the sinking of collieries including the Lady Windsor Colliery opened in 1886. At its peak, the colliery employed 1,500 workers. Subscriptions from industrial worker's wages and public fundraising initiatives built many institutions and welfare buildings dedicated to providing spaces for workers and their families to socialise, access education, and spend their leisure time. Ynysybwl Hall and Institute was opened in 1904 and contained a library, theatre, reading rooms, committee rooms, temperance bar and a public hall for 700 people. The building was demolished in the 1990's.
