A gift from the South Island EarthCache

東京海洋大学の前身の一つである東京商船大学は開学100年以上の歴史持ち、数多くの海のプロフェッショナルを育成してきた高等専門教育機関です。しかし、意外なことに大学構内のあちこちに「岩石」が残されています。
海洋大学に岩石が残してあるって面白いですね。一体どういうことなんでしょう？
Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine , one of the predecessor of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, has over 100 years of open history. In addition, Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine is a specialized educational institution that has cultivated many marine professionals. However, the rocks are left here and there in the university campus unexpectedly.
It is interesting that there are rocks left at Marine University. Why?

【玄武岩 Basalt】

玄武岩は100周年記念資料館の前庭に鍾乳石と一緒に展示してあります。これは昭和12年(1937年)、練習船大成丸が遠洋航海先のカロリン諸島クサイ島(現コスラエ島)を訪問した際に、城塞の石材を記念品として現地の人から船長に贈られたものです。
This basalt is exhibited with stalactites in the front yard of the Centennial Museum. In 1937, the Taisei-maru of the training vessel visited Kosrae Island of the Caroline Islands. At this time, A Chief on this island gave the captain the fortress Stone as a souvenir.

クサイ島(現コスラエ島)は東京から約4,100km離れた場所に位置する周囲約50kmの火山島です。(上の左図参照)　クサイ島は他の海洋島の火山や海底火山と同様に玄武岩からできています。
ここにある「レラ遺跡(Lelu Ruins)」は1,400年頃に栄えたレラ王朝の遺跡で、玄武岩の石柱(柱状節理)を積み重ねた約10メートルの高さの城壁の遺構があります。(上の右写真参照) 記念品として現地の人から贈られた石材はこの遺跡のものと思われます。
Kosrae Island is about 50km of the volcano Island located about 4, 100km away from Tokyo. (refer upper left figure) Kosrae Island is made up of basalt as well as volcanoes on other ocean islands and undersea volcanoes.
The Lelu ruins is the ruins of the Lelu dynasty which flourished around A.D.1,400. This ruins of the wall are about 10 meters high, stacked with lat of basalt(columnar joint). The stone which was given by the Island chiff as a souvenir (refer the right photograph above) seems to be the one of this basalts.

【お台場石(安山岩) Andesite】

大学キャンパスがある場所は、幕末になると江戸防衛のための調練場となりました。その後、海の側にあったことから砲台（越中島台場）の建設が計画され、幕府は伊豆半島周辺から石材を調達しました。しかし、維新の政権交代によって工事途中で中断されたため、お台場用の石材(安山岩)がそのまま放置されたのです。こうしてこの石は海洋大学の校庭に散在することになりました。
The location of this university campus became a training ground for defenseing Edo City at the end of the Edo period. Since this was on the side of the sea, the shogunate planned to build the Fortress, and raised stones from around the Izu Peninsula.
However, construction was interrupted in the middle by the change of Government of the Meiji Restoration. Therefore, the stone (andesite) for Odaiba was left in this place as it is. Thus, this stone was scattered in the schoolyard of the Marine University.

【玄武岩と安山岩の成分 Components of basalt and andesite】

玄武岩も安山岩も元はマグマである火成岩です。
火成岩に多くの種類の岩石が存在する理由は、主に①マグマの種類がいろいろあること (組成の多様性)、②熱いマグマから冷たい岩石になるまでの冷え方がいろいろあること、です。玄武岩も安山岩も火成岩の一種で黒っぽい色をした重い石です。(上図参照)
The origin of the igneous rocks are magma.
There are two main reasons why there are so many kinds of rocks on the earth. ①There are various kinds of magma (variety of composition), ②There are various ways to chilling speed from hot magma to cold rocks. Basalt and andesite are heavy rocks that have a dark color in a kind of igneous rock. (refer figure above)
