Astjorn is a bird sanctuary in Hafnarfjordur. No dogs or animals are allowed during the nesting season (mid May - mid June)
Astjorn (lake) sits under Asfjall which is a prominent feature in Hafnarfjordur. The lake area is protected bird sanctuary and home to several rare types of birds such as the Horned Grebe (lat. Podiceps auritus, Icelandic Flórgoði).
Astjorn is formed by lava stream that dams the water from flowing away and therefore a reservoir has formed which has ideal conditions for e.g. birds and small animals or insects that prefer wet habitat.
It is recommended that you park at the recommended coordinates for parking and follow the path east of the parking lot south towards the cache.
