I was
there the morning when the egg hatched within the nest. The mother
was no where to be seen, as the shell slowly broke apart from
within. First, a tiny snout could be seen, then withdrawn and
replaced by a claw, pushing and pulling at the shell. Finally, it
split in twain and, sitting there regally, was this amazing little
dragon. It ignored me momentarily, turning its head while looking
about with the sun shimmering off of its right side.
“” came from this being's opened mouth, its
quizzical eyes gazing upon me.
I knew not how to reply, fearful of a hex being placed upon me by
this magical and magnificent creature. I stepped back a bit as it
barked out, “”, making an unintelligible point!
I staggered a bit, mesmerized by the creature, and watched it shake
the shell remnants from itself while taking a tentative step toward
me. As it approached, it spoke yet again, in softer reassuring
tones: “”
It approached me, then, giving what sounded like a huff, turned its
back to the sun, and began to slowly meander. I followed at a
discreet distance, gazing at the beautiful shimmer of the sun off
of its back and scales.
While it walked, I swear I heard it singing in its strange tongue:
“” Perhaps it was just humming - it was hard to
tell.
After a short while, I picked up the tune and whistled along with
it. It stopped in its tracks, and glared back at me, grunting a
discordant, “”, its point seemingly that this was his song, and not
mine to intrude upon.
We walked a bit more, this beautiful dragon and I, in silence for
the most part, until finally it chimed up once again with
“”, then stuck its snout into the bushes a bit.
To the amazement and wonderment of my eyes, this shimmering
creature uncovered a minor treasure trove! I had always heard about
dragons and their treasure, but now I had proof!
The dragon noticed I had spotted the container, and, as it looked
at me, it nodded its approval of leaving this hidden location in my
care. With a deep breath that filled its chest, and a strong flap
of its wings, it was airborne, flying through the morning sky, off
into the distance, until it was just a glint of light in my
eye. |
