Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the Old Fort ruins, of which the town of Fort William takes its name.

The first fort on this site was a wooden construction. The site was transformed to a stone structure by order of King William III, hence the name, 'Fort William'. The stronghold was strategically placed, in line with Fort George and Fort Augustus, to keep the Highland Clans subdued.

The old fort and the town of Fort William with Aonach Mor, Carn Mor Dearg and Ben Nevis behind.

The settlement that grew outside the twenty foot high fort walls was known as Maryburgh after King William III's Queen, Mary. At one point, there was a move to rename the town 'Duncansburgh'. This name was only adopted by the parish church on the parade, which has recently become the Duncansburgh MacIntosh Parish Church - the town remained 'Fort William'.

The old fort is maintained by a group of volunteers, 'Friends of the Old Fort.' Over the past few years they have made a huge difference to the old fort area by making it a more inviting place to visit. One of the many enhancements they have made is installing interpretation boards, which will give you a lot of information about Fort William!

The cache is a small lock and seal container and contains a logbook and pencil. There is only room for a couple of small items. It is located at a scenic spot near a picnic bench, offering fantastic views down Loch Linnhe. Parking available nearby, but please take care when crossing carriageway! Please cover well when replacing cache!
