Geocache Description:

This is an easy drive by cache. We want you to come here to soak up a bit of the history of the bay.

Cache is a small pill container. There was a wharf and jetty at Waima when the freezing works opened in 1911. This was extended and improved, as few roads existed, so most transport of goods and people was by sea. More improvements were made by the Tokomaru Bay Harbour Board in 1914. Between 1913 and 1916 the port was at its busiest, with 400 vessels per annum. The New Zealand Shipping Company Offices and Woolstore, stables and managers house were constructed in 1912. The Waima was the launch owned by the Tokomaru Bay Harbour Board, and it was used for 27 years to ferry people, mail and freight to the Union Steamship Company ships, anchored offshore. Lighters came from Napier every four to six weeks to ferry out the wool and frozen meat. When the freezing works closed in 1952, and the coastal services to the bay ceased in 1963, the wharf was rarely used and fell into disrepair. Locals are now raising funds to restore the New Zealand Shipping Company Building and the wharf – no mean feat for such a small community. Donations towards the restoration may be made at the Tavern or the Four Square Store.
