Geocache Description:

B-17 Crash Site

On September 5, 1943, a formation of B-17 bombers took off from the airfield in Halls, TN en route to Gulfport, MS.  One plane turned north and was flying in northern Weakley County in stormy weather.  While making turns, the plane broke up and exploded at around 20,000 feet in altitude.  Eight of the ten crew members perished in the crash, the bodies and debris of the plane were thrown at the cache location and along the nothern side of the road to the river.  Citizens in the area remarked that the crewmembers who were killed were hanging from parachutes in the trees.
