This cache is named after one of the interesting and unusual fish you’ll find in Gordon’s Bay.
The Galjoen (Black bream or Blackfish) is only found along the coast of Southern Africa, and is the national fish of South Africa.
It is generally found around reefs at shallow depths around 10 m, often near the shore.
A Galjoen can reach 80 cm in total length and a weight of 6.5 kg. The body is compressed, and the fins are well developed, with prominent spines.
The lips are thick, with strong curved incisors at the front of the mouth, with smaller teeth behind the front incisors.
They usually feed on red and coraline seaweed and red bait, small mussels and barnacles found off rocky shores, and appear in particular to be a partial to the white mussels residing in the sandy beaches.
The cache is located on the Danie Miller Hiking Trail. The trail has a wide variety of indigenous plants, small streams, and is a contour walk which follows the contour above the top houses along the length of Gordon’s Bay just below the anchor. The trial is about 2.9km long and takes about 2 hours to walk, one way. It starts at Aurora drive and ends near the end of Suikerbossie drive.
In the late 1980’s Danie Miller was the mayor of Gordon’s Bay and built the trail with the help of his two daughters, Chanel and Lisa. He called it the “Mayor’s walk”. In later years the Gordon’s Bay municipality decided to rename it the “Danie Miller Trail”. The trail was later incorporated into the Kogelberg Biosphere and is controlled and maintained by the Biodiversity Management of the City of Cape Town.
The trail has no entry fee, and can be accessed at any time.
