Not to be confused with the volcanic vent Pu`u O`o with the same name, the Pu`u O`o Trail is a historic cattle route at the 6,000 foot level of Saddle Road and was used by ranchers to take their cattle from the slopes of Mauna Kea to the Keauhou Landing on the Puna Coast.
Today, only a short portion of the much longer Pu`u O`o trail is maintained as part of the State’s Na Ala Hele system of trails. The Na Ala Hele Pu`u O`o Trail is a 7.4 mile round trip that runs through a series of lava flows, grasslands, and kipuka — green “islands” of native vegetation — where native forest birds like oma`o, apapane, i`iwi, and amakihi thrive.
Trail head is identified by a sign on the south side of Saddle Road (Hwy 200) approximately 22.4 mi. from Hilo. Parking is limited.
Seasonal bird hunting is allowed, so wear brightly colored clothing for safety. The trail can be difficult to follow where it crosses lava flows, especially in daily fog. Cold climate with rain and fog.
Come prepared, this is not an easy hike..
This entire hike is over 5000' above sea level, so you'll need proper clothing for cool weather hiking. This area gets plenty of rain, so bring your rainjacket. Drinking water and a snack is also reccomened.
You will be looking for a larger cache painted in cammo colors and filled with a bunch of the most awesome SWAG ever, including a special FTF prize that will make your trip worth it. So come prepared, if you want to swap SWAG. The cache contains everything from water bottles to nanobots, frisbees to sea monkeys.The cache is located at the end of the trail.
