Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center is a park like no other. It is at the crossroads of industry and wilderness to create a location that is perfect for education, recreation, and restoration.
As you walk through the trailhead structure you step into an important habitat with less than 1% remaining. This landscape was traditionally a lush coastal prairie with a carpet of flowers and grasses that grow up to 8 feet tall and sports over 500 species of plants and countless critters.
This park has done much to protect habitats and create an environmentally area, including using recycled and ecofriendly materials. For example: the boardwalk is made from ipe wood, a hard Brazilian wood that does not require treating and has high resistance to insects and weathering; the piping for the trailhead and wildlife viewing platform structures is recycled from surplus oilfield pipe.
By integrating these natural habitats amongst the ecofriendly building practices, the park has created an exceptional place for you to enjoy nature a short distance from town, provides a place for industry workers and their families to get away, and is even a great spot for a quick lunchbreak.
This geocache is placed with written approval by park staff and has a geocache placement permit on file.
Congratulations to popawalker for FTF!
