Geocache Description:

A trip round the old assault course of HMS Royal Arthur

Parking is available at N51.25.080 W002.12.908

HMS Royal Arthur was originally set up in the Butlins holiday camp in Skegness during the 2nd World War, it was one of several assessment camps where new recruits would be assessed, kitted out and sent to there various depots. After the war the site was reverted back to a holiday camp and HMS Royal Arthur was relocated to to an establishment at Corsham Wilts where it stayed active until 1993 when the gates were locked for good and the site was left to rot.

Warning the camp does contain several asbestos contaminated buildings. The cache does not require you to enter the camp.

You are following the footsteps of thousands of Royal Navy leadership students and following the assault course.

The first stage would be a lung sapping run up the concrete ramp, you reach the top next to the remains of a flag pole at head for N51.24.949 W002.13.031. You need to count the number of upright white rails = A

Then head along the ridge line to N51.25.005 W002.13.201 and at the next upright metal pole count the number of metal earrings let the answer = B

Now head for the following N51.24.982 W002.13.236 down the very steep hill. Take care when wet.

At the gate count the number of horizontal bars in the style. Let the answer = C

You can now see one of the main air vents for the huge underground storage areas in the Corsham area.

Retrace your steps and head to N51.24.961 W002.13.115. Follow the concrete path you will see various different parts of the assault course. Stop when you get to the climbing wall How many support pillars are there? Let the answer = D

Head for N51.25.019 W02.12.747 via the footpath at N51.24.916 W002.12.994. You will pass the long pipe that the sailors had to crawl through on your left hand side. At the end of the concrete path you are at the main entrance to HMS Royal Arthur. Read letters on top of the gate post let the number of letters = E

Make a sharp left and the cache is hidden at:

N51.24.(B*3),(A+B+D),A+B
W002.12.(A+B+C+D),(E+B+D),E+C

After you have found the cache follow the path for a few metres before turning left and returning to your car.
