Palm Gully
Lost in
the rainforests to the west of Brisbane is a palm lined gully with
a tragic tale.
The walk
to palm gully is a trek through time, deep into primordial
rainforests. This is a walk that should not be undertaken lightly.
It involves walking through dense, trackless rainforest where GPS
reception may be sporadic and a compass and map will guide you more
faithfully. If you are not familiar with these 'old style' methods
of navigation then please do not endeavour to find this cache
without the company of an experienced bushwalker.
Start on
the Mt Glorious Road at approximately S27 17.853 E152 45.238, where
you will find ample parking.
Pass the
gate and walk 60 metres along the fire trail. It is at this point
you will find the portal into another world leading off to the
right. Follow this trail for about 2.5 kilometres to an old trig
point, in the form of a large rock cairn, lost amongst the
undergrowth. The cache lies about 400 metres down the hill side in
a north-easterly direction.
Very near
the cache you will stumble upon the remains of a crashed aircraft
lost here in 1977. It can be difficult to spot in the dense forest.
You will find the cache in the end of a large fallen tree about 20
metres downslope from the plane.
Take the
time to enjoy the magnificent surroundings of the rainforest and
maybe reflect on the events that cost a life all those years
ago.
