The Grampa Tree Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Shep & Kyle: Removed cache. A giant limb from the tree fell into the cache area making it difficult and dangerous to access. No replacement is planned as current WSP regulations make it time consuming to place and maintain a cache on park lands.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Northern section of Fort Ebey State Park on Whidbey Island. You will find one of the largest old growth Coast Douglas-fir on the island and the largest within the State Park.

The giant Grampa Tree (a Coast Douglas-fir) is 21.5 feet in circumference. The top has been broken off, but it is still alive. Satellite reception will be poor due to heavy tree cover until you get in the area next to the tree. In order to do a loop hike, you can park at the Ranger Station and pick up a map of the area or get one here (visit link) Then hike up the road a short distance (East) to the South end of the Kyle’s Kettle trail. Follow the trail down into an unusual valley kettle that contains a wetland and lots of native rhododendrons and back up the North side until you come to the Grampa Tree trail. This trail will pass by the Grampa Tree on the South side and loop back in to the Kyle’s Kettle trail at the North end of the park.

There are stinging nettles along the trail and near the cache . Be careful!!

This cache is in a ammo box. As it is painted camouflage it may be had to spot, so don’t give up! Please make sure that you replace the cache with care.
