REALLY SideTracked – Dunstable Town
Flanders and Swann Slow Train event No 15.

It's back! Nearly two years after the previous Slow Train event, the series continues with a geocaching meet-up between 1 and 1.30pm on Saturday 19th February, near the site of the old station at Dunstable Town.

This is the next in a series of SideTracked events based on the song Slow Train by Flanders and Swann. Written in 1963, the song laments the closure of many stations and railway lines under the Beeching cuts of that era.

"No whitewashed pebbles, no Up and no Down
From Formby, Four Crosses to Dunstable Town
I won't be going again on the Slow Train...
"

About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website.

About Dunstable Town Station

Dunstable Town in the 1960s.

Dunstable Town, originally called Dunstable Church Street, was a station on the former railway line from Leighton Buzzard to Luton, opened in 1858. It had a single wooden platform and originally a simple timber building which was replaced with a more permanent structure following a fire in 1871. A signal box was provided on the platform.

The station closed in 1965, though the line from Luton remained open for oil traffic until 1989. The track was lifted in 2010 and replaced with a guided busway system.

The event

We will meet on the grass outside the nearby fast food restaurant. Parking is available nearby, but please be careful with geokids and dogs, as the road may be busy.
