The Story of Hannah’s Ghost
The story takes place in the mid-1800’s when a young girl named Hannah became pregnant at age 16. When the baby was born at home, Hannah’s mother immediately took it down to the Missouri River and drowned it and then told Hannah that the baby was stillborn. Hannah is said to have later died from a broken heart.
Hannah’s parents laid her to rest in one their fields. On many nights, it is said that you could hear Hannah crying out for her baby. Occasionally, one could even see a dim lantern floating around in the darkness parts of the fields. It is also said that when it snows, no snow ever touches the grave.
When I was going to Plattsmouth High School back in the mid 70’s, the story of Hannah’s ghost circulated quite heavily amongst the students and everybody always talked about going to see Hannah’s grave at night. Some friends and I went up there once or twice, but we didn’t see any lanterns and definitely no Hannah’s ghost. While growing up on my Grandfather’s farm just to the north of Rock Bluff where Hannah’s grave is located, I recall my Grandfather saying that it must be Hannah’s ghost when things were heard going bump in the night.
Unfortunately, the story of Hannah’s ghost made the Rock Bluff cemetery a popular nightly gathering for teenagers and some serious vandalism was done to the cemetery. Someone had also lit a candle on the grave that started the grass on fire as well. We had heard that there had been some vandalism at the cemetery, but being the young flat bellies that we were, the temptation got the best of us so we decided to take a drive out there anyway. When we pulled up to the cemetery, we were met with lots of spotlights and somebody getting out of Sheriff’s car with a rifle. We could see a lot of people out there getting real active at our presence. I just calmly put the car in reverse, backed out like I was just turning around and went back the road we came in on. When I got home that night,my parents already knew that we had been down there because they heard it over the police scanner.
There isn’t much heard about Hannah’s ghost anymore but this is where the story originated from. The age on the grave stone doesn’t match up with the age of Hannah in the story so it’s probably been changed throughout the years.
The above coordinates will get you to Hannah’s grave site. From there you will have to solve xxx and yyy of the coordinates below by getting two pieces of information to get to the final cache. To solve xxx, subtract 979 from the year Hannah died. To solve yyy, you’ll have to locate a nearby headstone with a date of death that doesn’t exist. Then subtract 1004 from the year of death to solve yyy. This is an off-set cache that leads to a standard ammo box. The only approach to this cemetery is from the North and will take you down Main Street of the old ghost town of Rock Bluff. I’m also working a Rock Bluff cache. There is no parking lot and you can’t drive into the cemetery. Just park along the along the road, there are gates on the East and North sides of the cemetery. The road that goes west along the North side of the cemetery goes to a private residence. The hours for the cemetery are sun up to sundown and the sign does say that violators will be prosecuted. While I was placing the cache, a couple of dogs from the nearby house came over to keep me company. Their harmless, love to bark at cars and eat doggy treats.
