Geocache Description:

Let's get together and travel to Falcon Lake State Park, TX.  What better way to spend the first Saturday in the New Year than with your geocaching friends.

We will be meeting at the Home Depot Parking Lot in Mission, TX at 8:00 AM to set up driver and passenger arrangements.  We plan to return to Mission no later than 5:00 PM

Let’s all take a trip to Falcon Lake State Park at the western edge of Starr County along the Texas/Mexico Border.

About Falcon Lake State Park:  The 576-acre Falcon State Park is located north of Roma. The park sits at the southern end of the Falcon International Reservoir in Starr and Zapata counties. The reservoir straddles the border of Texas and Mexico.

Mexican President Adolfo Ruiz Cortines and President Dwight D. Eisenhower dedicated Falcon Dam in October 1953. The waters of the Rio Grande formed a lake 28 miles long behind the dam. This 84,000-surface-acre lake saves water, irrigates crops, and provides power, flood control and recreation.

The state leased the land for the park from the International Boundary and Water Commission in 1949. The park opened in 1965

Things to do at Falcon Lake State Park: You can fish, swim, camp, bird watch, water ski, boat, geocache, hike, or just relax and enjoy the mild climate. Explore 2.8 miles of trails, or bird-watch along the lakeshore and in the brushy areas away from shore. Besides the common bird species of the American Southwest, many tropical species also visit the park.

We will meet at the Home Depot parking lot in Mission, Texas and car pool to the park (about 90 minutes’ drive).  There we can enjoy the park amenities such as a butterfly garden, great birding, etc.  We will have time before and after lunch to enjoy the facilities and many trails in the park – there several geocaches in and around the park for those who have never visited the park or this area of Texas.

Things to Bring:

  • A bag lunch. A cooler full of ice (to keep your drinks cold) and bottles of water will be provided.
  • Binoculars
  • Passport (for those who wish to take a side trip to Presa Falcon (GC1N6HD)
  • $3 entrance fee to the park
