Geocache Description:

Located off the Trezona Loop of the Mesabi Bike trail in the town of Ely, MN. I WILL DELETE ANY SPOILERS (LOGS/PICTURES) THAT INDICATE WHERE THE CACHE IS LOCATED or of the CONTAINER. BYOP

There were five mines that collapsed to form Miners Lake. When the mining stopped and the pumps, which kept the water out of the mines, were shut off and the tunnels were allowed to fill with water forming Miners Lake.

The mines were the Chandler (north and south), the Pioneer (A and B), the Zenith (A and B), the Sibley, and the Savoy.

The Chandler Mine was the first mine in the Ely area to begin shipping iron ore. Where you are standing, the location of Chandler North mine is across the trail. Obey the signs. A total of 9 million tons of iron ore was taken from this mine in the years it was open from 1887 to 1942. Chandler South was located approximately where the Mesabi trailhead parking lot is located, just south of this spot. The total tonnage of iron ore shipped from this mine when it was in operation from 1892-1964 was 2 million tons.

The residential area to the west of here and the parking lot is known as Chandler Location. Locations were neighborhoods where people lived who worked in the nearby mine. So, even though there are no longer working mines, the areas still exist – Chandler, Pioneer, Zenith, Sibley, and Savoy Locations. the suburbs of Ely, but still part of Ely.
