Bedrock Earthcache EarthCache

This cache has been archived.

CacheDragons: I have waited long enough, it looks as though it could be years before they repair the road. No idea if they will ever open up the area more than they have already so rather than mess with it I am archiving this cache.

Geocache Description:

This Earthcache is located at the Saylorville Lake Gorge.

In the spring of 1984 Saylorville Lake levels reached a maximum height of 889.29 ft. m.s.l., with water flowing over the emergency spillway for 16 days. The force and speed of the water flowing over the spillway during the flood of 1984 created a "gorge" revealing many layers of bedrock that had never before been exposed in the Midwest . Geologists came from across the U.S. to see the many unique fossils and casts of prehistoric trees. Unfortunately, most of these were destroyed by vandalism. Today, there are still unique layers and fossils to be seen in the area as each use of the spillway reveals new sections of the many layers. The gorge was further expanded in 1991 when the emergency spillway was needed as lake levels rose to a maximum height of 888.94 m.s.1. and water flowed over the spillway for an 11 day period. Historic flooding along the Des Moines River during the summer of 1993 deepened the gorge once again to 70 feet and widened into a 10-acre "canyonland," with vistas of colorful, layered sequences of Pennsylvanian-age bedrock. The strata uncovered along the walls and floor of this canyon provide the best look at rocks of this age anywhere in the state.

For proof I am requiring that you email me the value that would replace the question marks below. Through out the gorge and prairie they have signs that explain what you are looking at. Find the signs that have the sentences that I have below and email me what the ??? marks are equal to. In order to complete this you must take the prairie trail to the Gorge.

To prove that you were at the site you must send me the value that would replace the question marks. To send email click here or click on my profile and then click on send message.
