Geocache Description:

Park at the gate opposite Coombe Crag Farm at N54 58.896 W002 38.500.

The Irthing is the major river of this area where the Romans found a more wooded landscape than is here today. In fact some of it was cleared for use in buildings and settlements along Hadrian's Wall. Take time to read the inscriptions on the quarry walls to see who has been there before you! This was once a wild and dangerous forest filled with wolves, boars and beavers with red kites flying overhead and for over 300 years into the 17th century, it was also wild and lawless with Border Reivers threatening all who didn't belong to their own extended families. The landscape is still challenging but at least today you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the valley alongside herons, kingfishers, dippers, otters and the occassional canoeist. Take care along the way though as it sometimes shows you more 'view' than you actually need!!! WARNING Don't go at night...you'll miss the views but you might not miss the great drops!!!
