Geocache Description:

Another historical theme cache from the dogs. This one is dead easy and just for some added spooky fun, why not do it at night.

In the early morning hours of January 1st 1963 two youths decided to go hunting for golf balls on the outskirts of their local golf course. This was at Chatswood Golf Links on the eastern bank of the Lane Cove River and very near what is now known as Fuller's Bridge. What they found however was to set off one of the greatest mysteries in the annals of Australian crime. The boys discovered a male human body, lying face down just off the track by the river. They raised the alarm and when the police arrived to inspect the scene they were presented with some rather mystifying discoveries. The body was lying face down and the clothes had been removed. However the clothes had then been placed perfectly on top of the body as if dressing a cut out doll. Even the sleeves and the trouser legs had been bent to follow the the lines of the splayed arms and legs. Later they found another body, this time female, about 13 metres further down the track and this was also neatly covered as if someone had seen them lying there and covered them up with the clothing and cardboard. There was no sign of struggle or violence however later tests of the surrounding vegetation suggested that the victims had been sick, either from over drinking (it was new years eve) or by poisoning???.

The bodies were later identified as those of Dr Gilbert Bogle, and Mrs Margaret Chandler and the mystery of their deaths captured the imagination of just about every soul living in Sydney at the time. Speculation was rife, stories of motive such as greed, adultery, espionage and even alien life forms abounded. For months the mystery dominated the press and radio, but to this day the police are no closer to solving the riddle of how these two socialites actualy died and who placed their clothes on top of the bodies.

That was almost 40 years ago. Today the area is still a track to the golf course but the actual location of the bodies required quite a bit of research to find. After doing this research I believe we have placed this cache as close as possible to the final resting place of Dr Bogle. The cache is fairly small but should be easy to find. While you are there, try to imagine the scene and what could have taken place here all those years ago.

Some more info about the affair can be found at The Bogle Chandler Affair Page. Although some of the details on this site can be of disputed accuracy, it gives a good summary and makes fascinating reading..
