Branch Brook Park is a four-mile long gem on the edge of the City of Newark. It was the first county park in the nation established in 1895 and has grown to its present size of 360 acres due to various bequeths from the upper crust of old Newark's monied families: Ballantine, Keene, Righter and Heller. These names live on in various roads around the park. The Morris Canal once ran along the western edge, the canal right-of-way is now used by the Newark Subway. The jewel of the park is Cherry Blossom Land which comes alive every April and attracts thousands of visitors to the park to view the hundred of trees that rival Washington, DC in size.
A hidden treat in the park is the Syndeham House. It is the oldest house in Newark, built in 1712. It has seen much in time on the Old Road to Bloomfield as the street is called. The house was built for newlyweds John and Susannah Sydenham around 1711. The house was expanded in 1836, with renovations done to the back portion, and the section's roof being raised. The house remained in the possession of the Sydenham family for 200 years and it was sold in 1954. Dorland and Elizabeth Henderson, owners of the house beginning in 1954, worked on the authentic restoration of the house. The Hendersons gifted the house to the Newark Museum in the late 1990's, but the museum declined because of the cost of upkeep. More renovations on the interior have been executed by present private owners to reflect contemporary living standards.
