Witch's Woods Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

CautionWetFloor: In light of moose_uk's recent escapade and information gathered from the farmer that the woods are in fact private land (oops!) I think it's time to archive the cache. Many thanks to everyone who's gone looking for it over the past couple of years in these quirky woods.

Geocache Description:

I've always been curious why these woods have been referred to by locals for many years as "Witch's Woods".

There was once a small building or house inside it, which over the years has become increasingly derelict to the point where what now remains is just some indistinct rubble, which itself is barely visible due to the overgrown foliage. (See photo titled "Witch's Woods circa 1975".) Was this building as innocent as a simple shed used by previous owners of the surrounding farmland? Or, according to some locals, was it home to a witch who once lived in these woods?

There have also been sightings over the years of Pagan-like gatherings and rituals in these woods.

I can't find any mention of these woods in books about local history. All these things continue to intrigue me about what their significance might be.

Cache description:

Small container containing notepad and trinkets. No pen or pencil, so please bring your own.

It's recommended you access the woods by walking up Anthony's Lane in Swanley Village, where a public footpath takes you between the farmer's fields and leads right up to the woods. If approaching from the park at the top of Emerson's Avenue in Hextable, please be respectful of the surrounding farmer's fields by ensuring you find a route which ensures you don't step on or near areas where crops may be growing. Good luck! :)
