Geocache Description:

Let’s quote prophet Tarabič from last decade of 19th century, when Šarganska Osmica was not even built, yet alone reconstructed: "Many years will pass before people remember the iron road and rehabilitate it. Then, people will travel to Višegrad not for work or if the need for that arise, but for fun, to get rest and to enjoy." After more than a century, we witness Tarabic's vision came true and watch famous "Ćira" train, after 25 year break, running over Mokra Gora again.

ŠARGANSKA OSMICA

To find the cache you must experience the train ride. You will need to book a reservation for your train ride in advance! For more information on ticket prices and the timetable, please check the related web page provided above in the cache header.

Information about heritage railway from 2016 season:

  • Trains are in service from April 1st to October 31st with two regular departures daily (10:30, 13:30)
  • During July and August third set departs daily at 16:10
  • Facultatively the fourth set might be included in the morning at 8:10
  • Tickets can be paid by credit cards in place as well
  • Reservations are not the subject to storno fees in case of no show
  • The whole trip by train is 2.5 - 3 hours

MULTI-CACHE

The multi-cache form is chosen to bring extra portion of excitement into exciting drive alone. Please make sure you obey the signals from train guide and rather consult the length of train stops on the return way, personally. Please do not spoil on which station the cache is hidden not to ruin the game for other geocachers. Be punctual and do not miss the rest of the ride!!
Quality of GPS signal is problematic as lot of kilometers are laid in the tunnels and GPS might be unreliable from place to place. Don't even think you will record GPS track similar to number eight. To find the stages of the cache, you don't need GPS device, in fact. However, to locate the final cache container, the use might be necessary.
Enjoy on your own the unique experience inside the train and the result of the workmanship of serbian engineers.



STAGE 1 - Mokra Gora Station (initial coordinates)

Please remember, you will need to book a reservation for your train ride in advance! So let's start our trip. The tickets were paid and in return, please ensure you have picked up the information brochure about the railway from the ticket office.
In the brochure you will find the answer to obtain first hint:
AB = the length of the shortest tunnel of heritage railway in meters.

STAGE 2 - Šargan Vitasi Station (N 43° 49.795 E 019° 32.546)

Usually the first stop of the trip, lasts about 10 minutes. Please obey the actual info of train guide.
It should be no problem to find a large rectangular window below the station sign, looking from the train on the left side of station building. Second hint is:
CD = from how many smaller windows is this large window composed ?

STAGE 3 - Jatare Station (N 43° 48.173 E 019° 31.099)

Usually the longest stop of the trip, lasts about 20 minutes. Please obey the actual info of train guide.
Behind the nice station building the stairs can lead you uphill to the wooden viewpoint. Yes, I will be unkind, you have to count the stairs. The third and last hint is:
EF = total count of stairs needed to reach the highest platform close to wooden shelter.
Important note - make sure you do not count couple of stairs leading from the highest platform down to the wooden shelter of viewpoint! The correct count is really interesting number.

FINAL STAGE = CACHE COORDINATES

To find the cache, it is not necessary to go through bushes. There is a small path branching off the main "highway". Please be stealthy due to muggels and mask everything even better than found. If you have problems to locate the cache, you should know that the cache container can be found even without the use of train (hence, do not miss the rest of the ride!).

ŠARGANSKA OSMICA

The construction of the railway began after World War I, March 1st, 1921. The railway was being built for 4 years and its length is 15,44km. There were around 3000 - 5000 workers engaged in the construction of this railway every day. 200 of them gave their lives building it. Although at the first sight unreachable, Šargan Mountain was surmounted on February 2nd, 1952. That day the first steam locomotive departed from Šargan by which a direct connection Belgrade - Sarajevo - Dubrovnik was established.

RAILWAY DESCRIPTION

The Ninth Kilometer The first railway station at the railway line from Mokra Gora to Šargan is called "The Ninth Kilometer". Thats how many kilometers there are to Bosnia. That border was introduced at the time of Austro-Hungarian annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Jatare Station Because Šargan is rich in water, the railway was very difficult to build. Spring water Jatarka was brought from one of the tunnels to the station Jatare which was very rare and unusual. This station used to be a resting place and a water station. Jatare station is also known for the fact that not one ticket had ever been sold at this station and for the fact that nobody got off the train here. It was almost impossible for the passenger to figure out in which direction the train was going and where it would pass.

Golubići Station Golubići in Serbian means a couple who is in love. Those who decide to tie the knot are called golubići in the beginning. That's also the name of this station which was built by famous serbian film director Emir Kusturica for the shooting of the film "Life is a miracle" (Život je čudo).

Stop at viewpoint At a Cross Šarganska Osmica is the most attractive tourist museum type of railway in Europe and it is also mentioned as a unique construction masterpiece of narrow-gauge railways in the world. At the beginning of last century, the designers solved the problem of 300 m difference in altitude at a distance of 3.5 km between stations Šargan Vitasi and Mokra Gora by building a railway in the shape of the number eight as you might best realize from the wooden lookout at this stop.

RAILWAY IN SOME NUMBERS

The main characteristics of the railway are the following:

  • The railway length between Šargan Vitasi and Mokra Gora, together with station tracks, is 15 440 m
  • 22 tunnels were constructed on the railway line and their total length is 5 445.22 m
  • The longest tunnel has the name "Alexander I" with length of 1 668.85 m
  • There are also 5 bridges, the longest being one above Kamešina river with 44.30 m
  • The maximum gradient is 18 ‰ (calculated for each 1000m of the railway line)
  • The minimum radius of the curves is 120 m
  • Mokra Gora station is situated at 567 MASL
  • Jatare station is at 705 MASL
  • Šargan Vitasi station at 810 MASL

Иза лепог станице изградњу степенице може одвести узбрдо до дрвене становишта. Да, ја ћу бити таква, морате да бројите степенице. Трећи и последњи наговештај је:
EF = укупан број степеница потребно да достигне највиши платформу близу бараку.
Важна напомена - уверите се да не рачунају неколико степеништа које води из највишој платформи до дрвеног заклона тачке гледишта! Правилна датотека је заиста занимљиво број.

Да бисте пронашли кутију, није потребно да прође кроз жбуње. Постоји мали пут грана са главног "аутопута". Молимо Вас да тајни и маска све још боље него што сте пронашли. Ако имате проблема да пронађу кутију, требало би да знате да је сакривен кутија може наћи чак и без употребе воза (дакле, не пропустите остатак вожње!).
