Amerkfan's Golden ... Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

sno_man: Time to let this one go, it served it's purpose from 10+ years ago. The adjacent property for access recently changed hands, and I have not had the chance to ask permission of the new owner. Congratulations again to Amerkfan, who long ago surpassed 1000 finds, and thanks to all who visited.

Geocache Description:

A golden ... container ... just south of an abandoned railroad bed. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ACCESS FROM THE ACTIVE RAILROAD TRACKS FURTHER SOUTH. THAT WOULD BE DANGEROUS AND ILLEGAL.

This golden ... container ... is to celebrate the 1000 finds by one heck of a guy, Amerkfan!

Amerkfan was an early staple in my geocaching experience, mostly because he lives near me, but also because he loves to hide relatively easy geocaches! Late last year, we were exchanging emails, and he asked me to look after all of his hides while he wintered in Florida. I agreed, but told him there was one I would not be able to look after for him. His “Alfred E. Newman (NOT!)” cache (GC1W623) is a "Premium Member Only" geocache, and at the time I was not a Premium Member. The next thing I knew, I had an email informing me that someone had given me a gift Premium Membership. And that is the kind of guy that Amerkfan is.

Since then, I have looked after his caches for him, and he has sent me humorous caching stories (occasionally with photos and/or video) from Florida. Why he chose to get his 1000th in Florida instead of New York, I’ll never know, but he is back in New York now, and I invite you to come and celebrate this great man and his milestone!

The cache itself is a ... container ..., painted shiny gold, hidden south of the old West Shore Railroad bed in Churchville, a short walk from the road. I didn’t see any poison ivy nearby, but there are lots of black raspberry bushes - hence the “thorns” attribute. I have noted a deer trailhead, and if you follow that to the "turn" waypoint, you can avoid all kinds of thorns and heavy bushwacking. Again, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ACCESS FROM THE ACTIVE RAILROAD TRACKS FURTHER SOUTH. THAT WOULD BE DANGEROUS AND ILLEGAL.

There once was an ammo can here, and even that had a story ... it used to belong to Barrington, and it was his "My Cache Goes Where the Wild Goose Goes" (GC4BF8), which was my first ever find. When Barrington decided to archive the cache, he said we could go out and pick up the old can ... so I carefully dried it out, cleaned it up, sanded out the rust, and repainted it ... GOLD! Unfortunately, the ammo can was recently stolen, so now we have an Amerkfan-appropriate golden ... container.

For FTF, there is a couple of nice, big Lammies and a bottle of super glue (for repairing broken cache containers!)

FTF Hounds - slow down, Amerkfan is FTF by prior notification! However, there is a small Lammy for STF.
