I've placed this cache for those working on Lookout Lisa's Puzzle
cache called, Idaho Forest Fire Lookout Challenge GC15059.
Bertha Hill Lookout is the first lookout in the Western US. It
was originally called Thunder Mountain. One site states the year
1902 and another says 1900. Mable Gray, a cook at the trail camp
climbed a 15' hemlock snag and sat looking for smoke between
mealtimes. A sad part of it's history is the fact that two lookouts
have been killed while on duty, one by lightening and the other by
a fall.
The current tower is a 56 foot steel tower with a 14 x 14 foot
live-in cab. It is the fifth to be located on this mountain. The
current one was constructed in 1958-9.
This lookout is owned by CPTA.
Either before retrieving the cache or after, stop by and enjoy
the view. There are picnic tables and outhouses nearby so make a
day of it.
