Geocache Description:

This cache forms part of the Emoji Geo Art series on the Palmiet River Trail.Ā

The cache is NOT at the coordinates posted. It is a mystery cache, so you have to find information to determine where the final co-ordinates are. Below is a question for you to answer. Use the coordinates next to the correct answer to ā€œupdate coordinatesā€ on the cache page. This will lead you to the final destination cache.

Question:Ā The Palmiet River Trail is a 10.5km circular routeĀ Ā ā€“ True or False?

Answer 1: True - then coordinates areĀ S 034Ā° 18.818' E 018Ā° 57.130'

Answer 2: False - then coordinates are S 034Ā° 21.660' E 019Ā° 00.219'

If your answer gives coordinates that look wrong, then they probably are, as the caches are located along a walking trail, and not in water!

The caches are placed along the Palmiet River Trail in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve.

A hiking permit is required, which can be purchased at the entrance (R50 Adult R30 child). It is worth it because the amenities and trail are well-maintained.Ā

This trail is only open from 07:30 to 16:00.

This trail is a 10.5km circular route containing 20 caches. It can take 3-5 hours to complete, depending on your fitness levels, and the time taken to find caches and rest. It is rated as easy and includes a beach on the river where you can swim, at around the 4km mark.Ā

The Palmiet River Trail is found in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve.Ā

The Kogelberg Nature Reserve is often considered the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom because of the exceptional quality of its fynbos.

The reserve lies within the southern stretch of the rugged Hottentots Holland mountain range and has remained isolated and remarkably unspoilt. Its high mountain peaks, steep kloofs, valleys and several tributaries of the pristine Palmiet River create a sense of remote wilderness.

Kogelberg is situated about 90km south-east of Cape Town and comprises a core area of 18 000ha and several smaller fragments. The Reserve is signposted from the coastal road (R44) where a gravel road leads for 3km through private property to the office. The coastal town of Kleinmond is about 8km south-east of the reserve

Guidelines:

ā€¢ Permits must be carried at all times.

ā€¢ The use of alcohol and smoking is prohibited on all trails to prevent any fire risk caused by possible negligence and/or intoxication.

ā€¢ The use of drones in the reserve is prohibited.

ā€¢ The making of fires is prohibited.

ā€¢ Sturdy, closed hiking shoes should be worn on all trails as trails are unsuited to the wearing of sandals/flip flops.

ā€¢ Please keep to designated paths/routes to prevent soil erosion and trampling of plants.

ā€¢ Do not pick flowers, disturb animals or deface rocks.

NOTE: There is no cellphone reception here, so caches should be downloaded beforehand onto offline lists or a GPSr.Ā

NOTE: The intention is for you to bag all the smileys on the trail, so the finds are not too difficult. If, after an extensive search using the hint and the given co-ordinates, you still can't find the cache, you are permitted to place a replacement cache at the spot where the hint and co-ordinates point to. If you find a container or log sheet that needs attention, you are also welcome to repair/replace it for the benefit of future cachers.
