Son muchas las batallas que se han librado entorno a esta gran fortaleza natural en los últimos 1.000 años. Piratas y reyes han luchado para conquistar y saquear lo que se escondía entre sus rocas. El mar esculpe este peñón a golpe del fuerte oleaje de invierno y bajo sus aguas se esconden riquezas marinas que hacen de este lugar un sitio único de la costa vasca. No son pocas las personas que se atreven con el reto de llegar hasta su cima, subiendo por los escalones tallados que te llevan hasta uno de sus tesoros. El nombre "Gaztelugatxe" proviene del euskera "Gaztelu" que significa castillo, "haitz" que significa peña o "gatza" que significa difícil, existe controversia al respecto. El término de "San Juan" le viene porque en 1053 los señores de Bizkaia donaron el templo, que previamente había sido una fortaleza, al monasterio pirenáico de San Juan de la Peña. Gaztelugatxe is one of the most emblematic points of the coast of Vizcaya. It is a small chapel which is accessed by climbing 231 steps that show the dramatic scenery of this protected environment for its natural values. The name "Gaztelugatxe" comes from the Basque "Gaztelu" meaning castle, "haitz" meaning rock or “gatza” meaning difficult, is not totally clear. "San Juan" is because in 1053 the Lords of Bizkaia donated the temple, which had previously been a fortress, to the pyrenean monastery San Juan de la Peña.
