Geocache Description:

The Prairie Storms Adventure Trail

This cache is part of a series called the “Prairie Storms Adventure Trail” developed by Living Skies 2014 MEGA Event volunteers. Enjoy the hidden secrets of Southern Saskatchewan by getting off the beaten trail to sites seldom visited, scenic views, historic sites and buildings. The name also pays tribute to the Alberta's “Prairie Winds Adventure Trail” which was created for the Best of the Bad (WestCan 1) MEGA event in 2011.

This series will also take you along the Red Coat Trail, which is a 1,300 km route through southern Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta taken in 1874 by the North-West Mounted Police in their quest to bring law and order to the Canadian West. In Saskatchewan, Highway 13 is designated as Red Coat Trail.

Coronach was a mighty thoroughbred horse who won England's Epson Downs Derby by five lengths in 1926. The C.P.R. rail line was extended through this area in 1926 and the townsite established was name Coronach in honor of the prestigious horse.

Coronach is located 10 km north of the Canada-US border in south central Saskatchewan, Coronach is a warm and welcoming prairie community that serves as the starting point for the Outlaw Trail between Canada and Mexico and as a gateway to Saskatchewan's own Big Muddy Badlands. The nearby Buffalo Jump waits to reveal its secrets to the survival of Canada's Indigenous peoples.

Currently, the landscape is rich with agriculture and ranching. Nestled in the area is a local coal mine that boasts one of the largest draglines in the North America. This mine serves the local coal fired generating plant, Poplar River Power Station, which currently produces approximately 1/3 of the electricity the entire Province of Saskatchewan. There are many amazing things to see, take in a tour of the badlands or the mine/plant, play a round of golf, take in a local festival and come meet the local people who have an appreciation of small town, rural living.)
