Michigan Spirit Quest #49

"Here Comes The Calvary"

WELCOME TO NEW CALVARY CEMETERY

Pittsford Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan

This is the second cemetery of the Church Of Hudson.
The older one is still within the city limits.
Some bodies were removed and brought to these grounds.

Clare Retan was born Jun. 8, 1888 in Hudson, MI, in Lenawee County,
and died July 1, 1931 Windsor Ontario, Canada

Clare Retan was born in Hudson, Lenawee County, Michigan, the son of Frank Arthur Retan and Florence Agnes Friend Retan. He had two sisters, Mrs. Bud Goodwin, of Adrian, Michigan and Mrs. Raymond Page, of Rollins, Michigan. He was the husband of Fern Inez Listeman Retan.

Mr. Retan was a graduate of The University of Michigan Law School. After graduation, he became associated in the practice of law with Grant Fellows, a former justice of the State Supreme Court, and Judge Bert Chandler.

A ten year Assistant Attorney General of the State of Michigan, Mr. Retan was appointed the State Attorneys' General in October 1926 by Michigan Governor Alex J. Groesbeck. He served for three months until William W. Potter took office.

Mr. Retan died suddenly on July 1, 1931 in the summer home of J.C. Reiman, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, following an attack of acute indigestion and heat prostration.

He was survived by his wife, Fern and his two sisters.

Clare Retan's career in law once was even noted in the The New York Times for his work on controlling food prices in 1919.
In an article named "Plan War On Profiteers: Ohio and Michigan Will Co-operate in Investigations"
from August 3, 1919.

Columbus, Ohio--Ohio and Michigan have pledged co-operation in the food price investigations, which have been launched in both states. Attorney Price of Ohio, and Assistant Attorneys General Pepper, and Clare Retan of Michigan, at a conference here not only pledged this co-operation, but expressed the hope that the entire group of States in the Central West would join in the investigation.

The co-operation by Ohio's Attorney General and the Michigan representatives, it was said, will consist chiefly in exchanging information obtained by Grand Jury investigations and the like, which may lead from one state to the other; also in the methods of conducting the investigations and prosecutions, if such are deemed necessary. "Michigan will gladly furnish Ohio with any information which may be of use in conducting investigations in her neighboring State" Colonel Pepper stated. Attroney General Price pledged equal co-operation on the part of Ohio.

The "Big Five" of the packing industry of the country may be investigated by Ohio food officials and required to report under the Ohio cold-storage law. Thomas C. Gault, Chief Inspector of the Dairy and Food Division of the Department of Agriculture, announced today he was investigating the Ohio law to determine whether the packers, doing an interstate business, could be required to make reports under the Ohio Law. Heretofore only, Ohio cold-storage houses doing business within the State have been required to make reports to Gault's Department of the amount of foodstuff's in storage.

This conference of Governors and attorneys General of the States to consider practical ways and means of dealing with the high cost of living and alleged profiteering in foodstuffs was suggested by Governor Cox in a telegram sent this morning by Attorney General Groesbeck of Michigan. "Private combines controlling necessaries of life and creating fictitious prices", Mr. Groesbeck telegraphed, "Must be met by public combines having for their object the stabilizing of trade conditions and the prevention of injustice as between the dealers and consumer. Investigations alone will not accomplish this end. Constructive policies must be formulated and put into operation by joint action of a number of States so as to bring about effective national and State legislation."

-The New York Times, August 3, 1919
