Balchik is a town in the North Bulgarian Black sea coast with population approximately 11 000 people. The town is an important port and tourist center in the country. One of the most important tourist destinations in the town is the Palace and Botanical Gardens, where is one of the largest cactus collections in Europe. The town has been named with a variety of names from its beginning and there are different hypotheses about its current name: from the name Balik which is the founder of the Despotate of Dobruja; from the Cuman word balikchik - "small town"; or from the Turkish balçık - "mud".
