Geocache Description:

This is the oldest traditional geocache located in Niagara Falls, New York! BRING YOUR OWN PEN OR RISK BEING DELETED. Here is another of the great New York State Education Department historical signs, put out in 1935! Parking for several cars is available right at the sign.

Judge Augustus Porter, the pioneer of Niagara Falls, arrived in 1795. He settled here in 1806 and the house was built in 1808. Prior to his arrival, the area had been known as Schlosser, and also as Manchester, a name given it by Judge Porter. Augustus Porter preceded his brother General Peter B. Porter, to western New York when the land was still virgin timber and the Seneca still held rights to all the land west of the Genesee River. Augustus was primarily a surveyor, however he realized it is was the best place in the world for hydraulic works. Porter, Barton & Co. was formed and the town eventually had a carding machine, a grist mill, a saw mill, a tannery, post office, tavern, and a few houses. An acre sold for $50.00. The Niagara County town of Porter is named for the brothers. For a wonderful, detailed history of their influence in many aspects of Niagara, Erie, and Genesee Counties please visit: http://www.mobot.org/plantscience/ResBot/Niag/Hist2/Porters.htm
