Geocache Description:

Surfcoast Secrets is a series of caches designed to share some of the places that make the Surfcoast special. These include iconic and lesser known views, local history and landmarks. #8 takes you to a spot close to a lookout over one of my favourite beaches.

Until it was included in the Point Addis Marine Park this beach was one of my favourite fishing spots. The sheltered water behind the reef known by the local surfers as "Jarosites" holds whiting, trevally, mullet, garfish and some thumping big stingrays.

The headland between here and Point Addis is known as "Jarosite Headland" and in the bush inland from there can be found the remains of a Jarosite mine from the 1920's. There are also many fossils in the rocks along this beach.

Access to the beach is via a steep concreted path we used to call "Heartbreak Hill" and it is a great walk from here to Point Addis. Beware though, stretches of the Southside Beach around the Jarosite Headland and the Eastern end of Point Addis beach are gazetted nude beaches, so if that kind of thing offends, pick a cold, windy, wet day to do the walk :)

The nearby lookout makes a good platform for whale watching in winter time. To the left of the lookout, you'll notice a strip of artificial turf. This is actually a hanglider/paraglider airstrip and when the conditions are right, this is a very popular takeoff zone and adds an extra dimension when checking for muggles. The cache is now relocated close to the main Surfcoast Walk, which can be busy at times, so keep an eye out for walkers.

The cache is a camouflaged 200ml Sistema. Please take care when returning the cache so that muggles don't decide to use the camo for something else !

Also, please take care not to damage the vegetation. The local conservation folks have put lots of work into revegetating the site. You will be able to reach the cache without entering any fenced off area, although that won't be the shortest route from the carpark.

There's a couple of scratchies there for the FTF.
