The date: April 11th. The year: sometime in the mid 1970s. The
location: my house, about 1/2 a mile northwest of this spot.
It's my birthday, and I open up the final "present", which is
simply a card. On it my father has written a note telling me that
I'll have to solve a series of clues to get my final present. The
first clue sends me off to my room, if I recall correctly. I follow
clues all over the house. Even now, almost 30 years later, I recall
the exact wording of a couple of them.
In the freezer, a note reading
Some like it hot.
(The next clue was in the oven.)
The only clue I needed help with was:
A boy and a dog and a yellow sea
will show you the way -- take it from me.
The next clue was hidden behind a picture in the living room
containing a boy and his dog running down a hill, with a glittering
late afternoon ocean in the background.
Eventually I was directed over to my neighborhood park. One of
the final clues directed me to this very spot. Stapled to the
railing on the bridge was a clue:
A goal you've defended lies nearby. There lies a
clue, exposed to the sky.
The soccer goals at Murdock School (adjoining the park) were wooden
and permanent in those days, and the final clue was stapled to one
of them. The clue on the goal directed me to return home, where I
found my present: a nice little stereo, with receiver, phonograph,
and speakers.
I've done many fun puzzles and multicaches since I started
geocaching almost two years ago, but none of them stick in my
memory as much as this hunt does, even though it was nearly 30
years ago.
Enjoy.
