Under rock
Cross of the Fevered It stands on the steep, rocky hillside of
Hosszú-hegy (Long-hill), on the riverside of Danube. The
huge, reinforced iron cross was erected by Mihály Nagy,
resident of Esztergom in 1874 for the sailors of the river Danube.
Folklore says that the fevered become healed if they go around the
cross three times on their knees. There's an amazing view from the
cross on the surrounding area. Once here stood the upper roman
military camp of the Danube limes built in the second half of the
4th century AD. The irregular triangle shaped camp had reinforced
walls with square shaped towers guarding it. The stronghold was
still in use in the 9-11th centuries AD. From the MOL gas station
in the North of Esztergom 5 minutes of travel by car is the
Búbánatvölgy (Valley of Sorrow) (Route 11). You
can park here: N 47° 48,835' E 18° 49,064 124 m. From here
you take the red triangle signed path. After a while the path turns
suddenly to the left and after 2-300 meters separates into two
(small sign shows). Rightwards you can climb the Sas-hegy
(Eagle-hill), 3,5 terrain, leftwards you can reach the cross. From
there you can have a great view on the river Danube, the opposite
side Burda and Börzsöny mountain. Take care of the
children! Gap! Additional Hints The blue-top box is 15x12x8 cms,
you can find it under a cliff. You would probably like to have a
walk in the Búbánatvölgy, there are 4 lakes, the
last one is a nice fishing-lake, the environment is nice. snake
