Geocache Description:

Anziché chiudere come sempre a mezzanotte quelle case rimasero aperte fino all’alba.
Addio, vecchi bordelli. Molti ricordano, qualcuno rimpiange. Molto belli quelli di San Pietro all’Orto e Chiaravalle.

..... Almeno in quel senso.....

----------------------------------------------------------------
A VERY IMPORTANT DATE IN OUR FATHERS’ LIFE
This is the translation of a nostalgic article by journalist Tullio Barbato. It could be hard to understand because of the "special subject". To better understand, just remember that before 1959, prostitution in Italy was fully legal into so-called "case chiuse" (closed houses), private houses where prostitution could be legally carried on. In 1959, the "Legge Merlin" (Merlin Law, named after its main author, socialist Lina Merlin) was approved, revoking the regulation of prostitution in the country, closing all "case chiuse" and establishing the offence called "sfruttamento della prostituzione" (exploitation, solicitation of prostitution) with the aim to punish pimping. The law, despite its good intentions to give more rights to dependent prostitutes, caused a notable increase of street prostitution.
" It was a wild night, singing and crying together. Instead of closing those houses at midnight, as usual, they stayed open until dawn. Was the "de Profundis" before the silence. It was September 20th, 1958, anniversary of the Porta Pia Breach. After eleven years of parliamentary battles, Senator Lina Merlin had won. In Milan they were about thirty. Those in the Via Ripamonti and Via Uberti street were "specialized" in young people, while the most "fashion" was the one in Via Disciplini. Farewell, "case chiuse" (literally "closed house", brothels). Today there are houses, shops, small stores, restaurants. The nice environments made of plush carpeting, private room, velvet, mirrors. Malicious bustiers, petticoats, chiffon. Perfume and cigarette smoke, a mixture of water, toiletries, talcum powder, face powder, lysol and ointments to mercury. Sofas round, dimly light generated by kitsch lamps. And the 'ladies'? Where are them? Fatima, Sabrina, Wanda Bologna who has been cited by Montanelli (the famous italian journalist) and again, Brunette, Maruska golden mouth, Wilmina from Turin, the French (though she were born in the Precotto area) and even Robespierre, names of battle and love. they are gone or they drag somewhere their age of eighty. Farewell, old brothels. Many will remember, someone misses. At the time, in the evening, people were used to go to the bar and pubs. Then they were use do say "andem a fà il gir di ges" (Milano slang), literally let's go around the churches. Was the password, the sacramental formula to go to the brothels (in italian "casino"). In Milan, the majority were concentrated in the center. In the Brera area there were four and two of them were wedged in a halfway house for abandoned girls. The most elegant was in Via Disciplini , at the beginning of Corso Italia. Was the most expensive at all but the people were received ina real living room, with glass and chocolate. A place for a few people, very few. The ones in Via San Pietro all'Orto e Via Chiaravalle were beautiful as well, then the one in Via San Giovanni sul Muro, and even closer another one, less expensive but not as nice as the others. To help them to became "fashion" was the environment and the furniture Chippendale-style. In Via Uberti and Via Alberto Mario, were also added the youth and beauty of the girls and even the cocaine, that, at the time, was called "macuba" and was carried in the packets of cigarettes Giubek. The mistress of the house of Via Chiaravalle, that later became a factory of electric cables, was Emma Lolli whose nickname was Mystery. She was used to keep in the hall a small monkey. The houses in Via San Carpoforo and Via Fiori Chiari were first-class, all in marble and with a room full of mirrors, run by Wanda "Bolognese", the one cited by Montanelli. To rule the house in Via San Giovanni sul Muro there was Rosa Ermenigilda Trovetti called "the Venus", famous for "starting the young ones" that were often taken there by their father, anxious that the initiation of their sons would happen in an environment that now we would say "protected". Convenient times. Morning, afternoon, evening. Break between noon and two in the afternoon. The evening hours from eight to midnight. Strict rules for the "ladies". Rotate every two weeks, moving to another city. Not kiss. Condoms obligatory with military and police. Shower every day and visit health care every other day. And above all, the feelings were forbidden." The "Merlin Law" was passed by secret ballot with 385 against 115 nay, on January 29, 1958. Seven months later there were no more "casinos" in Italy. THE CACHE: It is located almost in front of the old "casino" in Via Fiori Chiari, that now it's a restaurant ( perhaps it's closed). Since the signal is weak, use your experience: the cache is a nano and magnetic...
