Geocache Description:

This cache is one of a series based around the Fife Stop Line, a second world war anti-invasion defensive structure built in 1940/41, see cache GC11H67 for more details.

This is the largest and best concealed artefact of this cache series and I couldn't quite believe it when I first saw it, talk about hiding in plain sight.

The cache is located on the edge of the village of Kettlebridge where there is a bridge under the railway embankment. For anti-muggle reasons the cache is hidden on the secluded side of the bridge but having found it you are recommended to walk through and take a look at the archaeology on the other side.

The most obvious feature are the remains of a road block and small anti-tank wall can be found on the south side of the road at N56°15.297, W003°07.435. That however is not the subject of this cache which is instead to be found on the North side of the road, where starting from N56°15.308, W003°07.421 and running for over 300 metres to N56°15.442, W003°07.256 is what looks like a retaining wall for the railway embankment. This is in fact an anti-tank wall.

The wall has recently been breached at N56°15.422, W003°07.279 where the internal construction has been exposed. It is approximately 5 feet high and 3 feet wide with a peculuar inverted "L" cross section, presumably to reduce the volume of concrete required. I spoke to the householder responsible for the cutting breach who said it had been extremely hard to cut through.

The wall was designed to prevent tanks from climbing up onto the railway embankment. A normal wall would have been crushed by the tanks weight but this is strong enough to resist with it's height and width being carefully designed to prevent the track mechanism from obtaining traction.
