The founder of this ranch, John Fenton Pratt, emigrated from Ripton, Yorkshire County, England to the South Solomon Valley in 1880. Construction on the home here was begun in 1885 and at the same time he began planting cottonwood trees on the homesite and named his home Cottonwood Ranch. in 1982 the State of Kansas purchased the original ranch site and the Kansas State Historical Society today administers the property as one of the state's historic sites and the restoration of the site is ongoing.

This historic site is available and accessible to visitors 24/7 all year round and the curator for the site, Don Rowlison, invites visitors to stop at any time and take a self-guided tour of the property. If you visit the site between the hours of 10:00am - 5:00pm Wednesday through Saturday, or 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays, you may have a guided tour and also enjoy the interior of this historic home for a small fee.

Visiting this site is a wonderful way to place yourself in a piece of Kansas History that your whole family will enjoy.
