Geocache Description:

Þingvellir National Park is a busy place throughout the summer season. However, there are places within the park that are seldom visited and you can expect to be alone in the world while exploring and searching for geocaches.

Arnarfell farm is one such place.

It derives it's name from the mountain it shelters under. Arnarfell translates to "Eagle mountain". The farm has been in use through the centuries. It was finally abandoned in 1947. Not surprising when you think about the remoteness of the place. Although it's only an hours drive from Reykjavík today there was no chance of modern conveniences like electricity, telephone and radio that were becoming commonplace in the early 20th century.

While walking around keep your eyes on the ground. Evidence of human habitation are all around, some centuries old and are in the process of being reclaimed by nature, others more recent.

To get to the farm turn off road 36 at the coordinates given (N64° 13.348' W21° 03.277'). Open the gate and drive through. Don't worry...you are actually entering the park and the gate is there to keep the sheep out...not you. Close the gate behind you. The road is rough but perfectly passable by all but the smallest of cars (Yaris etc.). Just drive slowly. Should you choose to walk from the gate to the parking spot it would add 4,4 km to your walk. An easy stroll following the road and will take you approximately an hour.

Otherwise leave your car at the parking spot given and continue by foot. The walk will take you approximately 15 minutes. The cache is placed where there is a good view of the farmstead and over lake Þingvallavatn.

The cache is a clear plastic container with a red lid. It contains a logbook, pencil and knick knacks.

In the cache you will find a thermometer. I would love it if you take a measurement of the air temperature and post it in your online "Found it" log.
