Emäjoki oli aikaisemmin kuuluisa 12 kilometrin mittaisesta koskenlaskureitistään ja puhtaasta vedestään sekä Seitenoikeankoskestaan, jolla oli vapaana virratessaan pituutta hieman yli kolme kilometriä.
Koski oli ennen todellinen Korpi-Kainuun kuningatar. Nimensä koski sai seitsemästä oilingistaan eli suorastaan, joiden vuoksi venemiesten täytyi laskea vanhan sanonnan mukaan “seihtemästi oikiaan ja seihtemästi suoraan”.
Koskessa sattui vakava onnettomuus vuonna 1892. Viisi miestä seitsemästä hukkui veneen kaaduttua. Vene oli hakemassa siemenrukiita Hyrynsalmelta ruunun aitasta. Säkkilasti heilahti koskessa ja epätasapainoon mennyt vene täyttyi vedellä ja kaatui. Lopulta vene iskeytyi kallioseinämään ja pirstoutui palasiksi. Vain kaksi miestä pelastui kuin ihmeen kaupalla.
Voimalan alue on kulttuurihistoriallisesti ja valtakunnallisesti arvokas ympäristö, joka kuuluu Aarne Ervin suunnittelemiin Oulujoen vesistön voimalaitosympäristöihin. Ervin suunnittelemat rakennukset sekä alueen yhtenäinen ja puistomaisen avara ilme halutaan säilyttää myös tuleville sukupolville.
Voimalaitoksen rakennustöiden tuloksena syntyi 34 metriä korkea maapato, jota on pidetty Suomen korkeimpana. Padon valmistuttua veden alle jäi noin 3000 hehtaaria metsää ja suota. Maansiirtotöissä käytettiin valtavaa Marion-merkkistä kaivinkonetta, joka möyri Emäjoen uoman ja rantamat uuteen uskoon.

River Emäjoki was previously well known of its 12 km rafting rapids, and pure water, as well Seitenoikea rapids, free flowing having a length of slightly more than three kilometer.
The rapid was before the real queen of Korpi-Kainuu. Its name was received from seven straight river section, or even why the men's boat had to be calculated according to the old saying "seven times in the right direction, and seven times straight".
Serious accident occurred in 1892 at the rapids. Five of the seven men drowned in a boat after the fall. The boat was looking for seed of rye from Hyrynsalmi. A cargo bag swung in the rapids and the boat went to the imbalance and filled with water. After that the boat crashed. Eventually, the boat struck a rock wall and shattered into pieces. Only two men were saved miraculously.
The plant area is culturally, historically and nationally valuable environment that is designed by Aarne Ervin Oulu River water power plant environments. Ervin-designed buildings in the area as well as a uniform and a spacious park like appearance is to be preserved for future generations.
Resulted in the construction of the power plant 34 meters high weirs, which is considered to be the highest in Finland. The dam is completed under the water was about 3,000 hectares of forest and swamp. Construction operations used in a huge Mario-branded excavator, who dug out the riverbed Emajoki and the littoral to the new faith.
