Geocache Description:

THE STINER FARM

In 1911 the provincial government passed The County Reforestation Act which provided funds to both counties and individuals who were prepared to plant trees, just in time to help Ira Stiner whose farm on the south side of Sideroad 25 (now OBeirn Rd.), was gradually blowing away and contributing to the impassable conditions on the sideroad which was filling in with snowdrifts in winter and sand dunes in summer.

Ira started planting trees on his property and by 1922 when Reeve Owen Davies brought a committee from the county to tour the Uxbridge properties devastated by blow sand, Ira could show them 6 000 trees about 9 feet tall. It still wasn't enough trees to save the sideroad and the reeve couldn't convince County Council to get involved in the big blow sand problems in Uxbridge. In fact, Reeve Owen Davies couldn't even convince his own constituents that reforestation was an affordable solution to the problem and they defeated him in the next election.

York County had started tree planting and Owen Davies continued his crusade as a private citizen with the help of The Dept. of Agriculture, and finally Ontario County fell in line. (Our part of Durham Region used to be Ontario County) Uxbridge Township did also and purchased 10 acres on the north side of Sideroad 25. Four generations of the Stiner family, Ira, his father Fred, his son Forrest and Forrest's children, pitched in to help plant trees.

In 1949 County Council approved the purchase of half of Ira's farm for reforestation. Today all of it is now part of the Durham Regional Forest Roseville Tract.

If you would like a long leisurely hike to the cache, enter from the entrance on Con. 3 north of Goodwood but the shortest route, a 20 min. walk, would be from the entrance on the west side of Con. 4 north of Hyw 47. The cache is only a few metres off one of the side trails. It is a small lock n lock with room for small tradeables.
