Geocache Description:

The Old Wires Track

So named for the telegraph line that was constructed along the route way back in 1872.

The track is well marked and gives views across Maratoto. It's steep in places and during winter there can be muddy spots. When I placed the caches the track was overgrown in parts and there were a number of tree falls across the track. Nothing to be concerned about though.

The track is approx 3 hours and ends where the track meets the 4WD track

When you have reached the end there are options:

1. Return the same way

2. Return via the 4wd track. Approx 2 hours but it is designed for 4wd vehicles

3. Continue East for 30 min along the 4wd track to the Tairua River where there is a camping site. Then you can continue across the main range and descend to the Wentworth Valley (Approx 2.5 hours) or 10 mins after the Tairua River there is the Waipaheke track to the right which returns to the Maratoto Road. A short walk away from the start of the Wires track. This is a motorcycle track and takes approx 3 hr

Getting there

Just south of Hikutaia, turn off SH26 onto Maratoto Road. After 6 km, turn off into Wires Road. The track is signposted off Wires Road 500 m before the gate and carpark.

This cache

The holding pen was used by local farmers Mr Thomas and Mr Green who allowed cattle to graze the area. It was last used in 1946.
You are looking for a camoed pill bottle.

Please take the usual precautions when entering the bush. Tell someone where you are going and ensure you have enough food, water and clothing. And enjoy.

Please bring your own pen.

Note

When I placed these caches I did a round trip. Up Wires. On to do "Steam Engine Cache". A long stop at the Tairua crossing for lunch. And back down the 4wd track. Total time for me was 7 hrs.

To assist in Kauri protection always
Clean your gear. Remove all soil before AND after forest visits – clean your shoes, tyres and equipment
Use a wash station if available
Stay on the track AND off kauri roots
