Geocache Description:

This is one of the series of caches placed throughout Camden County to bring awareness to historical locations. It has been placed here with the permission of the Mayor of Lindenwold. Please be respectful of the area around the cache as nothing needs to be disturbed to find it.

Charles H. Pharazyn and his wife, Louisa, moved to this section of then Gloucester Township in 1883. Accompanying them were their three sons – Charles, Frank and George.

When he was only 19 years old, Charles H. Pharazyn Sr. had been a fifer under General Zachariah Tayor during the Mexican War of 1846-1847.

Charles and Louisa were building a substantial home for their family on the southeast corner of Linden and Hawthorne Avenues and had just moved in before the great blizzard of 1888. The permanent outside doors were not ready, so temporary batten doors of one inch lumber were used. The high and heavy snowdrifts pushed down several of these doors. They were hastily repaired and the snow was shoveled out.

He built two more houses on Linden Avenue – one for his son Charles and the other for his son George.

Charles Sr. taught the young boys of Lindenwold and soon had a fine fife and drum corps playing eight or more lively numbers. Charles was also a master of the violin playing both classical and dance music. His son Frank, played the piano professionally.

Charles died in 1921 at the age of 94 years.
